Petroelia of Serres

A living treasure of Greek olive cultivation

Petroelia of Serres is a beautiful example of how a local treasure can remain alive when there are people who care for it, protect it, and bring it forward.

Very often, the information that preserves the history of a variety is found among the producers — the people who walk through the olive groves. The ones who take the initiative to move forward with faith in what is different.

Our family business, founded on the exclusive cultivation of Greek olive varieties, cultivates, mills, and bottles Petroelia of Serres as a monovarietal olive oil.

It connects history with the real place of origin. Petroelia is not simply an entry in a catalogue of varieties; it is made up of trees that continue to bear fruit in the same land where they have been cultivated for generations. It is the ancient, native variety of our homeland.

At a time when much of Greek olive cultivation is based on a few widely known varieties, Petroelia of Serres stands as a rare example of a native Greek variety that has survived through time and continues to be cultivated in the place where it was born. It is the authentic ancient native variety of our land.

The Kostis brothers during the harvest of Petroelia of Serres — a rare native olive variety that continues to thrive in its place of origin, carrying the history, character, and olive-growing heritage of the Serres land.

Petroelia is a local variety from the region of Serres, with a presence connected to the old olive groves of the Serres land. For decades, it remained almost unknown outside the region, as its cultivation was limited to family olive groves and scattered centuries-old trees that survived mainly in semi-mountainous areas and at the foothills of Mount Menoikio.

It is an olive variety with a distinctive fruit formation, as the olives grow in pairs. It is the only olive variety that bears fruit in this particular way.

The value of the variety lies not only in the production of extra virgin olive oil, rich in polyphenols, but also in its genetic uniqueness. Unlike many modern plantations based on widely used commercial varieties, Petroelia is part of the authentic Greek olive-growing heritage of Macedonia.

In the villages of Dafnoudi and Agios Christoforos in Serres, centuries-old trees over 200 years old still survive, bearing witness to the long-standing presence of the variety in the region. These trees are not merely productive units, but living monuments of the agricultural history of Serres, having survived through different historical periods and generations of cultivators.

A defining characteristic of the variety is that it grows and produces at altitudes above 300 metres, fully adapted to the unique climate of Serres, which is marked by low temperatures and humidity in winter, and high temperatures and drought in summer.

A special contribution to the revival and promotion of Petroelia has been made by the family business Poteus, owned by the Kostis family. The family consciously chose to invest in the local varieties Petroelia and Lefkoelia of Serres, creating a vertically integrated production unit that begins in the olive grove and extends all the way to the bottling of the final product.

The name “Poteus” is connected to the ancient name of the village of Pethelinos, formerly known as Potolinos, and refers to “Poteus Zeus,” an ancient title of the god Zeus. The choice of name reflects the philosophy of the business: respect for history, the land, and local tradition.

As part of the effort developed around the variety, particular emphasis is placed on preserving authentic propagation material from old native trees of the region. The preservation and reproduction of these trees is essentially an act of protection for a rare Greek genetic resource, with the aim of keeping Petroelia unchanged for future generations.

Through our own certified nursery, we begin with authenticity as the foundation of the olive tree and ensure the quality of the olive oil.

The olive oil produced from Petroelia is characterized by an intense fruity aroma, with notes of green apple, freshly cut grass, wild herbs, and fresh walnut. It combines a pleasant bitterness with a subtle spicy aftertaste.

It is an aromatic olive oil, with a clean taste on the palate and a rich finish — one that impresses, as most people have never tasted anything similar before. Its quality has already been recognized in international tasting competitions, with the monovarietal Poteus Petroelia of Serres olive oil receiving distinction at the Great Taste Awards in London.

The history of Petroelia proves that Greek olive cultivation is not limited only to the well-known varieties of southern Greece. At the foothills of the mountains of Serres, through centuries-old trees and people who chose to preserve tradition, an authentic Macedonian olive variety continues to survive.

Petroelia is not simply a variety. It is a piece of the history, biodiversity, and cultural heritage of the Greek land.
